The Welt Union Teckel mourns Antonio Palladini
07.09.1956 - 31.08.2026

It is with profound sadness that the Welt Union Teckel (WUT) bids farewell to Antonio Palladini, who passed away on 31 August 2026.
With his passing, the international Dachshund community has lost a personality who, for decades, was far more than the holder of distinguished offices. Antonio Palladini was one of those individuals whose name becomes inseparably linked with a breed because they devote their knowledge, their convictions and a significant part of their lives to its service.
Since 2003, Antonio had served as President of the Italian Amici Bassotto Club. As President of the FCI Earth Dog Commission, he contributed his exceptional experience particularly to the international working field. Within the Welt Union Teckel, he most recently served as a member of the Board. His connection with the WUT, however, reached far beyond this position and extended back over many years.
Of particular importance was his commitment to international working activities. Antonio was not a man for whom international cooperation existed merely in meetings, committees and regulations. He wanted it to be experienced in practice – and he made it possible.
Under his leadership, Italy repeatedly became the host of important working trials of the Welt Union Teckel. As early as 2007, the Amici Bassotto Club organised the WUT blood-tracking trial without judge accompaniment in Nevegal near Belluno; in 2010, Antonio once again took responsibility for organising this demanding international trial. In the years that followed, Italy and the ABC continued to host WUT working events and world championships. In 2017, Antonio himself served as a member of the international panel of judges at the WUT World Championship on artificial blood tracks in Tuscany. As recently as 2022, Dachshunds and handlers from eleven nations came together in Val Veny for the WUT World Championship on 20- and 40-hour blood tracks.
These events were far more than trials and rankings. They brought people from many countries together, enabled different hunting and cynological traditions to meet and be compared, and created personal bonds and friendships across national borders. In doing so, Antonio embodied one of the fundamental principles of the Welt Union Teckel in a very special way: transforming a shared passion into a genuine international community.
For many years, he also contributed to the professional and technical development of the WUT. He participated in the creation and further development of common international regulations and, through his experience and his clear understanding of the nature and purpose of the Dachshund, helped shape cooperation across national borders.
Antonio was a breeder and judge by conviction. Together with his wife Barbara, he founded the “Della Val Vezzeno” kennel in 1984. The extraordinary breeding successes achieved over the decades represent far more than titles and awards. Above all, they reflect an understanding of the Dachshund in which beauty and performance, conformation and character, hunting passion and functional soundness were never regarded as opposites.
This was an essential part of Antonio’s cynological philosophy: for him, the Dachshund was never merely a beautiful dog. It was, and had to remain, a versatile, capable and strong-charactered working dog whose original qualities deserved to be preserved.
Those who met Antonio encountered a man of profound knowledge, clear convictions and a deep passion for our breed. He was prepared to take a position, to debate and to stand firmly for what he believed to be right. Yet behind this determination there were always decades of experience and a sincere concern for the future of the Dachshund.
His death leaves a void that cannot simply be filled by appointing someone else to an office.
What remains is his legacy: in Italian and international Dachshund breeding, in working activities, in the regulations he helped to shape and in the many international trials he made possible and supported – but above all in the people to whom he passed on his knowledge and in generations of Dachshunds that bear his influence.
At this difficult time, our thoughts are with his wife Barbara, his family and our friends of the Amici Bassotto Club.
The Welt Union Teckel will honour and preserve the memory of Antonio Palladini.
For the Board of the Welt Union Teckel
